Audible difference in players? Thread starter MediumRare Start date Oct 4, Oct 4, I see on various forums that different music players have different SQ. A hardware manufacturer told me the same thing just last week.
And personally, I think I hear a benefit to Audirvana. And yet, bits are bits, right? So, amirm , please save us from this mystery: Do these players deliver different bits or clock speeds or jitter or “musical ether” to a DAC via USB? Does it matter if you have “good” DAC? BillG Major Contributor Oct 4, While there may be some subtle differences in the sound quality due to their various processing engines, they will be just that when the processing is kept to an absolute minimum.
Yes, having a competently designed, transparent DAC helps, but I wouldn’t concern myself with clock speeds, jitter, etc. Unless one is willing to do bit level comparisons of the player outputs when rendering the same level matched audio, people saying this and that about the sound quality is just an opinion.
And a dealer’s would be the last opinion I’d trust to make that determination as their underlying motive is profit. As for what you think you’re hearing, a double blind, level matched listening test between players would be quite revealing Last edited: Oct 4, Rja Major Contributor Oct 4, Hi If there are differences, that’s more likely to be in streaming stability.
The way the system is correcting for an-avoidable errors timing, lost packets, For computer data transfer, if a packet has to be sent again, the only difference is that you’ll have to wait more for your transfer to be finished.
For audio or video, when buffer is empty, that’s just lost data. And then distortion of the signal and not small amount! Rja said:. If there are differences, that’s more likely to be in streaming stability. I mean: a bit as Amir demonstrated with the revuew of the REL wireless relay.

Thread Starter Blumlein 88 said:. You’d need to be more specific about the players. Most good players will submit the correct bits. They are bit perfect. The move to a subscriber model doesn’t bother me.
But the pricing does, somewhat. Qobuz on its own provides significant value for me. Audirvana does not alone in comparison. So, if push comes to shove I’ll ditch Audirvana.
A shame. It’s the pricing, not necessarily the subscription model that’s the critical decision for developers, and their customers. And the perceived value. Otherwise I use the Qobuz player for convenience. Thus the subscriber model can be costly. On the other hand. I have multiple Audirvana licenses to cover multiple machines that I use exclusively. If not, the monthly cost of using Audirvana across my machines would not be worth it.
Good luck folks at Audirvana! Wunderhorn May 28 The subscription is a slap in the face of their customers. Subscription-only models for a piece of software like this is a sign of pure greed and blatant disrespect. Rlevent May 28 They have significantly increased the price of this app by going to a subscription model.
SInce the app is a music player and not a service, there is no justification for a subscription. There are other apps that offer similar or better performance that are not subscription apps, such as JRiver Media Center. I have been using this app for years, but I will not use it any more. Jriver o audirvana free download.Audible difference in players? (Audirvana, JRiver, Roon, MusicBee, etc.)
I am going back to ripping my old CDs and having my own local library. Audirvana Plus mentions 5 Tidal rewrote the PC program’s playback, thoughts? As I’ve said before, no real rival in terms of sound output quality.
Trust me or try it yourself they offer a free trial. Also, their motto is “Hear the Difference”. What are some alternatives? When comparing JRiver Media Center and Audirvana Plus, you can also consider the following products Kodi – Kodi is an award winning free and open source media player that got its start on the Xbox console.
Roon Music Player – Roon is a music playing application for audiophiles Emby – media server for personal streaming movies tv music photos in mobile app or browser for all devices android iOS windows phone appletv androidtv smarttv and dlna. JRiver Media Center vs Kodi. JRiver Media Center vs Emby.
JRiver Media Center vs foobar The other major element to Jriver is their agile approach to programming. Ask for something , if its doable then its done within days and released. Thank you very much for your excellent review of HQ Player! Apparently new Mac mini is running silently even when rendering video edits. I was looking for modern audio software that would run on very old computers like Pentium 4 with Ram not more than 1 GB and no Pea instructions processors.
Audacious was working on newest version of Linux Zorin Lite playing radio streams all kind of formats including Flac MotherEarth radio station. Why to throw away old PC if it is running Linux for old hardware with ease.
Perfect to play radio streams. Thats why I am not interested in those radio stations built inn Audirvana and Roon Roon has one kind of on demand radio station that is playing same MQA encoded music from little jazz concert. I found only this feed to be interesting. I like to find on the web my own addresses of radio streams and use either VLC or Audacious to play them.
Every 10th track is classical music being specially played for you! Foobar, Firefox browser or special windows app with link to download is listed on radio station website containing only one page, but very useful and simple same as current version of Audirvana. No fancy feathers. I think we providing here lot of useful info on this forum you and me! I am going to post here some info about solving difficulties to play within Audirvana rips from very good sounding MQA Cds which are already popular in Japan and believe me they sound great, very deep and dynamic.
Audirvana is playing them and Roon as one piece album no split between tracks. Where Roon is playing them right away but they have to be kind of renamed using simple tool app downloaded from official MQA website in order to play these rips in Audirvana. App is free to download and require only register with that website. I introduced aurdirvana at one time in a hi-fi audio internet cafe and joined more than people. It is much more stable and the sound quality is good.
Dogs do not abandon their young. But audirvana abandoned 3. Using Audirvana Mike I have the same observations as you! But I am trying to be positive because I like music and technology and progress that is being made by all this I believe hard working people. I started to listen to music that contained pops and clicks and mono tape hiss.
One day I told my friend standing beside brand new turntable, that some day will be something that will play music with no pops and clicks. Now we playing from cloud etc. Jriver is my favorite interface app in audio mode only switchable in upper view menu. In option settings it is very easy to turn DSD capability. No MQA opposite to Audirvana. This is best legal source of Hi res formats that I know.
Very well organized with lot of great recordings. No illegal info on this forum. Lets keep it clean! Audirvana is playing them no problem no need changing and adjusting any settings like Jriver. J river needs some experience. Audirvana is simple ready to go easy package with excellent sound. But I soon realized that Qobuz player was not great with Win 10 and I tended to lose the connection to my music when I changed from Qobuz to JRiver and back.
I had had on and off connection issues with JRiver previously but had ploughed on because I liked the sound – kernel streaming etc. But looking around I discovered that Audirvana came with Qobuz support, and after installation of the 3.
Apart from the sound quality, what impressed me was the ability to change from Qobuz to my own NAS music and back without any problems whatsoever. Mo more disconnects. On Thursday, I was about to buy the software when I learned that soon Audirvana 3.
Now would it be worth it to buy the stand-alone installed 3. While I was wavering, the software purchase option was removed, so when I tried to access the page on Friday, I was unable to buy the stand-alone software. I like the interface and sound quality of Audirvana 3. But is that worth getting onto the wheel of subscription for?
When I use my PC, its just because I need to use one of two professional applications that are necessary for my work and that are better than anything existing on Mac. It happens to me once or twice a year. By the way, I use these specialized tools on a subscription model, and the cost of the subscription is more than Euros per month for each application!
But I think that configuring Foobar should be an interesting by itself and a pleasant way for me to familiarize with the architecture of the PC platform. I play with Audirvana purely for variety, like having multiple sets of headphones, tubes or wire. Its only for the sake of the hobby and for the occasional change. But I guess some people like the variety of playing different formats. I found JRiver many years ago and was so delighted with the product.
It does everything I want and more. Yes, there are many free products out there, but none that does so many things well. Trun Recent member Posts: FredMau Member Posts: 1. Good pc soundcard and boxes who need more thumbs up for this program! Kal Member Posts: 1. Other than JRiver being a stellar media center, including everything that has already been mentioned in the posts above Believe it or not, the fact that Soundspectrum’s visualizations ‘G-Force’ and ‘Aeon’ work flawlessly with the Music part of the program, was decisive in my buying it.
I’ve gotten a lot of help here. I hope I can give some help back, too. Lunatique World Citizen Posts: Prior to using Jukebox, I had used many other well-known and obscure music librarians, and Jukebox was just the most feature-rich and responsive. Very, very few other music librarians have this feature, and if they do, they are missing other features important to me.
This has saved me a ton of time in customizing playlists based on the exact parameters of my choosing. I was always interested in Music.
And started using mp3 early, because only in this way I could get to know a lot of different types of music. But it was mostly popular music. Since then I have purchased JRiver on a regular basis.
Now in my older days I use it more for Movie watching, and it really it the best allround player that I know about. It delivers excellent quality audio and video experience.
I am so glad that I found it early on. And also the forum is excellent and tolerant with newbies and very helpful in a useful way, learning something.
Really glad I did it instead of just accepting the flaws of oled technology. JRiver was very helpful here. Vlc is not even near JRiver when it comes to interface and features. Very good Streaming Features DI. Very active Expert Community. I have a relatively big library: about I decided to give JRiver a trial run in late October The trial went as planned, where I was able to confirm an almost replication of video quality compared to the UDP Kodi is configured to use MC28 as an external player.
The setup is phenomenal and I often find myself browsing the library and clicking play to see the screen go blank, then onto the film via MC The only thing missing is Dolby Vision playback.
